Position Pieces for Cello, Book 1 by Rick Mooney
This book is an incredible tool that I have used for over fifteen years to teach my students how to shift in and out of positions. It covers half position all the way up through the fourth position. The student will learn theory and hand placement with a "Geography Quiz," "Target Practice," and "Names and Numbers" exercises. In each position, there are clever and very entertaining duets that the student can practice at home and then perform with the teacher. Complete with pictures of each position and fingerings where needed. Many wait to use this book until the student has been playing for a few years, but I start even my 6-7 year olds (very slowly at first) learning how to find the positions. There are some good little challenges, but there is enough information in the book to explain everything. You and your student will absolutely love these pieces. They are also very helpful as a sightreading supplement. Rick Mooney is a genius at making technique fun! To learn upper positions and the tenor clef, look for Position Pieces Book 2.
